Oven Repair Cost: Should You Repair or Replace?

What common oven and stove repairs cost, and a simple way to decide whether a repair is worth it.

An oven that won’t heat right before a family dinner feels like an emergency. But most oven problems come down to one part, and most of those parts cost far less than a new range.

Here’s what the common repairs cost on gas and standard ovens and stoves, what each one involves, and when replacing makes more sense. Prices are in Canadian dollars, before HST, and include parts and labour.

Oven Not Heating? What It Usually Costs

Standard ovens

The bake element on the oven floor (or hidden under it) is the most common failure. Often you can see a blister or a break, and it won’t glow red.

A bake or broil element is usually $150–$300. If the element looks fine, the temperature sensor ($130–$280) or a relay on the control board is next.

Gas ovens

The usual cause is a weak igniter. It has to get very hot before the gas valve opens, so a worn igniter can glow without ever lighting the burner.

A gas oven igniter is usually $180–$320. If the oven takes much longer than usual to light, the igniter is wearing out.

Uneven baking or wrong temperature

Often a temperature sensor, a weak element or igniter, a worn door gasket ($130–$280) letting heat out, or a convection fan ($180–$350). Put an oven thermometer on the middle rack to see how far off it is before you call.

Stovetop and Burner Repair Costs

  • A gas burner clicks but won’t light: usually a dirty or cracked igniter, a burner cap that’s out of place, or blocked ports. Cleaning and drying the burner fixes some. Otherwise, an igniter or spark module is about $150–$300.
  • Clicking that won’t stop: moisture or food around an igniter, a sticking switch or a failing spark module.
  • One element on a coil or smooth-top stove won’t heat: the element or its control switch, about $140–$300.
  • A cracked glass cooktop: $400–$900+. Stop using a cracked glass top until it’s checked, because spills can reach the elements underneath.

Repair or Replace? A Simple Rule of Thumb

Usually repair when:

  • the fault is one part: an element, igniter, sensor, switch, gasket or door lock;
  • the oven has been reliable until now;
  • it’s a built-in wall oven, double oven or slide-in range that fits your kitchen exactly. Replacing one can mean new cabinetry or trim.

Think about replacing when:

  • the repair is a control board or glass cooktop on an older range, and the price is getting close to a comparable new one;
  • it has needed several repairs in a short time;
  • you want features your current range doesn’t have, like convection or induction.

A good technician gives you the repair price first and an honest view on whether it’s worth it. You should never feel pushed either way. For fridges, washers and more, see Should You Repair or Replace Your Appliance?

When to Stop and Call

If you smell gas, don’t switch anything on or off. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.

For sparks, a burning smell or a tripped breaker, switch the range off at the breaker and call us at 1-888-642-0352. Gas range repairs should be left to a technician.
