Common Problems

Common Microwave Problems We Repair

From microwaves that run but won’t heat to sparking, door switches and dead controls, these are some of the most common microwave problems we diagnose in Vaughan homes.

Hand touching a still-cold bowl of soup in an over-the-range microwave with the light on

Microwave Runs but Doesn’t Heat

The light is on, the turntable turns, but the food stays cold.

Causes & checks

The usual causes are the magnetron (the part that makes the heat), a high-voltage diode or capacitor, a door switch, or a blown thermal fuse. These parts carry high voltage, so a technician should test them.

Sparking or Arcing Inside

Most often a dirty or burned waveguide cover (the small panel on the inside wall), food build-up, metal in the cavity, or chipped interior paint.

Causes & checks

Stop using it, because ongoing sparking can damage the magnetron.

Door Switch Problems

A microwave won’t start unless its door switches say the door is shut.

Causes & checks

A worn switch can stop it from starting, make it cut out mid-cook, or blow a fuse. A door that won’t latch is often a broken latch hook or spring.

Turntable Not Turning

Usually the turntable motor, a worn drive coupler under the glass tray, or a roller ring that’s out of place.

Causes & checks

Check that the tray is seated on the coupler first.

Over-the-Range and Built-In Microwave Repair

Aria services over-the-range, built-in and drawer microwaves only. They’re sized to your cabinets, many are part of a matching set, and the over-the-range ones also work as the range hood for the stove below. Replacing one means finding a model that fits the same opening and trim, so repairing it is usually the better value. We take the unit down or out carefully, fix it, and remount it.

1-Year Parts & Labour Warranty

Completed microwave repairs are backed by our 1-Year Parts & Labour Warranty on Completed Repairs, which is rare in appliance repair.

Repair or Replace

Should You Repair or Replace Your Microwave?

For over-the-range, built-in and drawer models, most repairs are well worth it compared with the cost of replacing and refitting. If a magnetron or transformer repair on an older unit would cost close to a new one, we’ll say so.

  • Age & Condition

An older microwave with rust inside the cavity, a damaged door or repeated failures may not justify a major repair.

  • Type of Failure

Door switch, fuse, diode, turntable and fan faults are often practical to repair. Magnetrons, transformers and control boards cost more.

  • Parts Availability

Parts for some older or discontinued models are limited or slow to source.

  • Repair Cost

We compare the repair price with the cost of a comparable new microwave and tell you plainly if replacing makes more sense.

If replacing makes more sense, we can install your new microwave. Call 1-888-642-0352 to book.

Installation

Microwave Installation

We install over-the-range, built-in and drawer microwaves from $129, including mounting and connecting an over-the-range vent to existing compatible ducting. See microwave installation for what’s included.

Microwave installation starts from $129. Final pricing depends on the microwave type, model, installation requirements and existing connections.

What’s included: Mounting to the wall plate or into the cabinet or trim kit, connecting to an existing compatible outlet, connecting an over-the-range vent to existing compatible ducting where applicable, and a test run.

Before installation day: Check that the new microwave fits the existing opening or space above the range and that there is a compatible outlet. Tell us if it’s over-the-range with outside venting or needs a trim kit when you book so we can confirm the scope.

Old appliance removal: Ask when you book and we’ll let you know if haul-away is available.

Why does my microwave run but not heat?
Usually the magnetron, a high-voltage diode or capacitor, a door switch or a thermal fuse. These carry high voltage, so have them tested.
Why is my microwave sparking?
Most often a dirty or burned waveguide cover, food build-up or metal inside. Stop using it until it’s checked.
Is it worth repairing an over-the-range microwave?
Usually, yes, because a replacement has to fit the same opening, trim and venting.
How much does microwave repair cost?
Most repairs run about $100–$280. Control boards are about $180–$350, and a magnetron or transformer $250–$450.
Do you install microwaves?
Yes, from $129.
What types of microwaves do you repair?
We repair over-the-range, built-in (wall) and drawer microwaves from all major brands, including magnetron, door switch, turntable, control board and vent fan problems.
Why won’t my microwave turn on?
Check the outlet and the breaker first. If it still stays dark, a blown fuse or thermal cut-out, a door switch or the control board is the usual cause. Don’t open the cover yourself, because parts inside can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged.
Why does my microwave stop in the middle of cooking?
A worn door switch can cut the power when the door shifts, and a broken latch hook or spring can stop the door from staying shut. Make sure nothing is caught in the door and that it closes with a firm click. If it keeps cutting out, have the switches tested.
Why isn’t my microwave turntable turning?
Check that the glass tray sits on the drive coupler and the roller ring is in place. If it still won’t turn, the turntable motor or a worn coupler is the likely cause.
Why is the fan or light on my over-the-range microwave not working?
A failed vent fan motor, a light socket, a worn touchpad or the control board can stop the fan or light. If the keypad isn’t responding either, the touchpad or board is the likely cause. The fan and light matter for cooking below, so it’s worth booking a repair.
How much is a diagnostic visit?
Our diagnostic is regularly $129, and right now it's $99. It's always waived when Aria does the repair.
Can you come today?
