A fridge that stops cooling puts your food at risk, but the cause is often one part or a simple airflow problem. The fastest way to narrow it down is to notice which section is warm.
A warm fridge with a cold freezer points one way. A fridge and freezer that are both warming up point another. Either way, the goal is the same: keep your fresh foods safe and get the fridge cooling properly again.

Check the Basics First
- Temperature controls: make sure the control hasn’t been bumped warmer or switched off. After any change, wait about 24 hours before judging it. Some models have a “showroom” or demo mode that runs the lights but not the cooling. Check your manual.
- Power: the light comes on and you can hear it running. Remember, the light can work even when the cooling doesn’t. If the fridge is completely dead, check the circuit breaker and the outlet before anything else.
- Doors: the doors close fully and the gaskets seal properly all the way around. A paper slip closed in the door should feel some pull. A torn or flattened gasket lets warm air in and makes the fridge run all the time.
- Vents: nothing is blocking the air vents inside the fridge or freezer. Overpacked freezers often block the vent that feeds the fridge.
Freezer Cold, Fridge Warm

On most fridges, the cold is made in the freezer and a fan blows it into the fridge side. If that cool air stops moving, the fridge warms up while the freezer stays cold. Common causes:
- An evaporator fan motor that has stopped. Open the freezer, press the door switch, and listen for the fan.
- Frost build-up on the evaporator coil from a defrost problem. You may see heavy frost on the back wall of the freezer.
- A stuck air damper between the two sections.
These are usually repairable.
Fridge and Freezer Both Warming Up
When both sections are getting warm, the cooling system itself is more likely the problem:
- Dirty condenser coils (see below)
- A condenser fan that isn’t running (on models with coils underneath)
- A start relay that clicks but doesn’t start the compressor
- Less often, a compressor or sealed-system fault, which needs proper testing to confirm
Clean the Condenser Coils
Dust and pet hair on the coils make the fridge work harder and cool less.
Unplug the fridge, find the coils behind the kick plate at the bottom front or on the back, and vacuum them gently with a brush attachment. Check your manual for your model first.
Coil access differs by brand, and our Samsung fridge, LG fridge and Whirlpool fridge pages cover the problems we see most.
Give It Time After Any Fix
After cleaning the coils or clearing a vent, plug the fridge back in and give it several hours to cool down before you judge it.
If it’s the freezer not freezing, see what we check in the freezer section of your fridge.
If the freezer was heavily frosted, a manual defrost (empty, unplugged, doors open, towels down) can bring a fridge back temporarily. But the frost will return if a defrost part has failed.
Fridge Running but Not Cooling: What the Sounds Tell You
- Clicking on and off, then quiet: often a start relay or compressor that isn’t starting.
- Fan running but no hum from the bottom: the compressor may not be running.
- Loud buzzing or rattling from the back: often a condenser fan hitting debris or wearing out.
- Total silence with the light on: a control or thermostat fault is likely.
Sounds help narrow it down, but a technician needs to test the part before replacing it.
How Much Does Fridge Repair Cost?

- Door gasket
- $120–$250
- Temperature sensor or thermostat
- $150–$300
- Evaporator or condenser fan motor
- $180–$380
- Defrost heater or defrost system
- $180–$380
- Main control board
- $250–$550
- Compressor or sealed system
- From about $500, and over $1,000 in some cases
Diagnostic regularly $129, now $99, and always waived when Aria does the repair. You get the exact price before any work starts.
When to Call a Technician
Call if the basics check out and the fridge still isn’t cooling after a few hours, if the freezer keeps frosting up, or if you hear clicking without the fridge starting.
If you smell burning or the fridge trips the breaker, unplug it and call right away. Scheduling a service early, before the food is at risk, usually means a simpler repair.
